Why I Contribute to Citizen Science

I didn't find citizen science. Citizen science found me.

A few years ago, I stumbled upon EyeWire; a game-like platform where you map neurons in a mouse retina by tracing their branches through 3D electron microscopy data. It felt like playing a puzzle game, except the puzzle pieces were real neurons from real brains.

That was the gateway.

Soon I was folding proteins on Foldit, running Folding@home simulations on my laptop, and catching stalled capillaries on Stall Catchers to help Alzheimer's research. With over 1.3 million points earned on Folding@home and 83 work units completed, I've contributed real compute cycles to protein dynamics research.

What citizen science taught me

The most important lesson wasn't about biology or neuroscience. It was about access. You don't need a PhD to contribute to science. You need curiosity, a computer, and the willingness to learn.

That lesson is what's driving me now toward computational biology. I want to work at the intersection of data and biology; where citizen science projects already live; and build tools that make science more accessible to everyone.
